One cable. One notch a day.

A steel sphere hangs from the winch. Each watch you may lower it one notch. The echo sounder burns the step, the log takes the entry, and the fathom below pays what it holds.

Open a position and the sphere goes over the side on its cable. The counter reads zero notches.

1 fmCall the notch

Once per watch, hold the knob and release with the tension lever in the brass band. Early is slack, late is overrun; both reset without cost.

2 fmThe trace records

The stylus burns one step onto wet paper. The log takes a timestamped line: 0614 · 12 fm · held.

3 fmFinds compound at depth

Each fathom yields a little more than the one above it, paid on the whole position, found so far included.

4 fmHaul up

Call the winch to reel in and the sphere surfaces with everything it found. The trace and the log stay with you.
